IELTS vs TOEFL

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and IELTS (International English Language Testing System) are two of the most commonly accepted tests to verify your English proficiency. The decision to take either of the two tests will ultimately depend on many different factors.

Find below some noticeable difference between the two that may ease you in making your choice.

Duration of exam :

IELTS is for around 2 hours and 45 minutes while TOEFL take almost 4 hours.

Types of questions : Multiple-Choice vs. Short Answer questions

A major difference between the exams is that, for the Reading and Listening sections, you will have to write your answers from what you just heard or read for many of the questions on the IELTS, while all the answer choices will be given to you on the TOEFL. Not all questions on these TOEFL sections are multiple-choice, but majority of them are, and for the ones that aren’t, you still do not need to create your own answers.

Texts Used in the Reading Section :

The Reading sections for both the TOEFL and IELTS have many different  passages, each followed by series of questions. However, the two tests use varied kind of passages. The IELTS uses academic texts as well as passages from newspapers and magazines. The TOEFL only uses academic texts, which means its reading passages are often denser with more challenging vocabulary and concepts to understand. If you’re not confident with your English reading skills, you may find the IELTS Reading section to be easier.

Computer-Based Speaking vs. Oral Interview :

On the TOEFL, the Speaking section, like all other sections of the test, is done with the help of a computer. You will hear recorded questions and respond into a microphone to give your answer. With the IELTS, you actually will be having a conversation with a real person.

TOEFL vs IELTS: Which is harder?

This is probably the question you are most concerned with, but it is quite difficult to compare the TOEFL and the IELTS directly. A better way to find the answer to this question is to ask yourself a few questions. Answer the following questions with a simple “yes” or “no".

  • I am comfortable having a detailed interview in-person. YES/NO
  • I have legible English handwriting. YES/NO
  • I can understand a variety of dialects of English. YES/NO
  • I prefer tests with many question types, including multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, matching, true/false, and flowcharts. YES/NO
  • I feel most comfortable discussing non-academic topics in English. YES/NO
  • The authentic English sources that I read/listen to/watch are usually made to entertain. YES/NO

If you answered YES to most of these questions, then you might find the IELTS to be more up your alley.
